CONTEXT | |
The Niger Delta Region is situated within the southern part of Nigeria and its known to play host to the wealth of the nation because of its richness in crude oil which accounts for over 70% of the revenue accrue to Nigerian economy. However, it is sad to note that these communities in the Niger Delta like Kaani and Wiiyaakara in Ogoni land are among the poorest in our nation because of environmental pollution, under development and conflict. Meanwhile, the productive capacity of the region is locked up in the rural informal subsistence-level economy. The economic situation of people living in these communities seems to be largely dependent on the handouts from multinational oil companies. This act strangles their commitment to engage in other productive activities that would improve their livelihood. Subsequently, sectors such as agriculture have been overlooked by the youths and are majorly left to women who do not have the means to fully produce enough food to meet their needs and those of their families and society. Our observations indicate that the underlying problems in our communities border on the mindset and perception of the people to be resilient. The mentality here is that they are being deprived of the dividends from the crude oil resources that they play host to and continually agitate for. As a result of this, they fail to realize and explore other income-generating opportunities and resources within their immediate environment. | |
