We champion transformative advocacy and institutional reforms that empower communities, strengthen democracy, and ensure equitable development. Our Governance and Advocacy programs are rooted in five pivotal pillars, each critical to building a Nigeria where transparency, participation, and justice prevail:
Governance, Advocacy, and the Sustainable Development GoalsCIDI’s governance and advocacy initiatives are catalysts for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By promoting peace (SDG 16), ensuring electoral integrity (SDG 16), advancing fiscal accountability (SDGs 16 & 17), advocating for tax justice (SDG 10), and shaping inclusive policies (SDGs 5, 10, & 16), we lay the groundwork for systemic change. Transparent governance reduces poverty (SDG 1), strengthens institutions (SDG 16), and unlocks opportunities for all (SDG 8). When citizens lead, governments listen, and resources serve the people, Nigeria’s potential becomes limitless.
Conflict fractures communities and stalls progress. CIDI fosters peace by bridging divides through dialogue, trauma healing, and grassroots reconciliation initiatives. We empower local leaders, women, and youth to address the root causes of violence—inequality, exclusion, and resource disputes—and co-create pathways to lasting peace. Together, we’re rebuilding trust and nurturing resilient societies where diversity is celebrated as a strength.
Free and fair elections are the soul of democracy. CIDI mobilizes citizen observers, trains youth on electoral rights, and leverages technology to promote transparency in elections. We advocate for credible voter registrations, violence-free campaigns, and accountability in results. By safeguarding the electoral process, we amplify the people’s voice and restore faith in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Every Naira counts. CIDI empowers citizens to track public spending, demand transparency, and hold leaders accountable. Through community audits, civic education, and digital tools, we ensure budgets prioritize education, healthcare, and infrastructure—not corruption. Our work transforms taxpayers into watchdogs, fostering a culture where public resources serve the public good.
Fair taxation fuels equitable development. CIDI advocates for progressive tax policies to combat illicit financial flows and educate citizens on their fiscal rights and responsibilities. We work with governments to close loopholes, expand the tax base, and channel revenues toward social services. By making taxation inclusive and transparent, we bridge the gap between Nigeria’s wealth and the well-being of its people.
Policies shape lives. CIDI drives evidence-based advocacy to influence laws that advance gender equality, environmental justice, and social protection. We equip marginalized groups—women, persons with disabilities, and rural communities—to engage lawmakers and demand rights-based reforms. From grassroots campaigns to national dialogues, we turn citizen voices into policy action.
As champions of ecology and development, CIDI is committed to fostering sustainable solutions that protect our planet while uplifting communities. Our work is anchored in five transformative sub-themes, each vital to securing a resilient and prosperous Nigeria:
Ecology, Development, and the SDGsCIDI’s integrated approach to ecology and development directly advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By protecting biodiversity (SDG 15), governing oceans sustainably (SDG 14), fostering green economies (SDGs 8 & 7), ensuring food sovereignty (SDG 2), and driving climate action (SDG 13), we weave a tapestry of resilience and equity. Together with communities, governments, and partners, we are crafting a future where people and the planet thrive.
Sustainability, justice, and shared prosperity.Nigeria’s rich biodiversity—from the Cross River gorilla to the majestic elephants of Yankari to the magnificent sea turtles in Ogulagha, Burutu of Delta State—is a treasure we must safeguard. CIDI leads efforts to combat poaching, restore degraded habitats, and empower local communities as stewards of conservation. Preserving wildlife allows us to protect the ecological balance that sustains life and cultural heritage.
Our coastal and marine ecosystems are lifelines for millions. CIDI advocates for sustainable ocean governance to combat overfishing, plastic pollution, and illegal activities. In cooperation with fishermen, policymakers, and coastal communities, we promote policies ensuring healthy oceans, thriving fisheries, and a sustainable blue economy for generations.
Leaders must be encouraged to prioritize the cost of our environment over economic prosperity. Therefore, CIDI champions green economic pathways, empowering youth and women through eco-tourism, renewable energy projects, and circular economy innovations. CIDI envisions Nigeria’s economic agendas aligned with ecological integrity, creating jobs while preserving natural resources.
CIDI works with smallholder farmers to promote agroecology, seed diversity, and climate-resilient farming. Food sovereignty is a right, not a privilege. By resisting harmful industrial practices and championing local food systems, we ensure communities control their food production, nutrition, and resilience in the face of global shocks.
From the Sahel’s droughts to the Niger Delta’s floods, climate change is reshaping lives. CIDI empowers communities with adaptive strategies—early warning systems, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable infrastructure—to turn vulnerability into strength. Education and innovation are our tools to build a climate-ready Nigeria.
we are dedicated to fostering resilient, informed, and empowered societies where everyone can access the care, knowledge, and support needed to live healthy, fulfilling lives. Our community health programs focus on four critical pillars, each addressing urgent challenges while nurturing hope and equity:
Community Health and the Sustainable Development GoalsOur approach to community health is a cornerstone of sustainable development. By tackling drug use (SDG 3: Good Health), combating HIV/AIDS (SDG 3), advancing sexual health rights (SDGs 3, 5, and 10), and promoting mental well-being (SDG 3), we drive progress toward a healthier, more equitable Nigeria. These efforts ripple outward—strengthening education (SDG 4), reducing inequalities (SDG 10), and empowering women and youth (SDG 5). Together with our partners, we prove that healthy communities are the foundation of a thriving nation.
Compassion, justice, and collective action. Our strategy for winning victims of drug use and prevention is ‘Breaking the Cycle of Addiction (BCA),’ substance abuse is threatening lives, families, and futures. CIDI combats drug use through grassroots education, youth mentorship, and community-driven rehabilitation programs. We partner with local leaders to dismantle stigma, provide counseling, and create safe spaces for recovery. By addressing root causes—poverty, trauma, and lack of opportunity—we empower individuals to reclaim their lives and rebuild their communities.
HIV remains a pressing public health challenge. CIDI champions inclusive awareness campaigns, free testing drives, and access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy. We work to eradicate stigma, educate on prevention, and ensure no one faces HIV/AIDS alone. Through peer networks and partnerships with healthcare providers, we amplify the voices of survivors and advocate for policies prioritizing dignity and care.
CIDI empowers women, girls, and marginalized groups with comprehensive sexual health education, family planning resources, and access to safe, affordable services. We challenge harmful norms, combat gender-based violence, and advocate for bodily autonomy.
CIDI breaks the silence around mental illness through community workshops, counseling services, and anti-stigma campaigns. We train local champions to recognize signs of distress, provide psychosocial support, and connect individuals to care. From schools to workplaces, we normalize conversations about mental well-being, ensuring no one suffers in silence.
